As we feared, the first bill attacking wetlands protections has been filed. Sponsored by Representative Randy Maggard, HB 527 requires municipalities and counties to purchase land for wetland buffer zones via eminent domain and preempts dredge and fill regulations to the state. This bill appears designed to avoid any developer vs community conflict similar to the unpopular vote to reduce wetland buffers earlier this year in Manatee County.
